Starting a Push-Up Regimen

I came across a GREAT book at Goodwill a few years back entitled “7 weeks to 100 Push Ups” and I highly recommend this book to anyone starting a workout regimen or looking to switch it up a little bit, even if you’re an experienced lifter.

Since starting this program a few years ago, my push-up volume has more than doubled, as well as inspiring an increased affinity for higher volume in other workouts outside of push-ups.

It’s solidied the belief that the All Mighty Push-Up is truly the one best strength strength increasing exercise in the world, for the variety of muscles it engages, and strength it induces.  Plus, there are so many varieties.

The program is super simple.

You just have to be consistent and write your rep numbers down for each set, and aim for one more than you did the previous training day for each set.

You won’t always get an improvement each training day, but over time you definitely will-assuming you’re consistent, intense, and use proper form.

If your bodyweight isn’t low enough, or if you’re not yet strong enough to do a floor push-up, I recommend a modification where you use a stable surface (Smith machine works great, but also a park bench, heavy couch, etc) and incrementally lower yourself over time until you’re doing them at floor level.

I would aim for being able to do at least 15-20 reps at a given level if your modifying the push up’s, before lowering yourself a few inches, then just keep repeating that procedure until you’re doing them at the floor level.  This technique is something I’ve used with my training students to great effectiveness.

The main thing of importance when doing the push-up (as with all exercises really) is that your form is ideal, and always the pursuit of perfect form.  This means no raising or lowering of the buttocks, or bodily sway left or right, (squeezing the core will help with this), and making sure to lower yourself slowly to the floor so you’re fighting gravity and not only getting half the benefit on the way up.

You can scribble your reps on a piece of paper or anything, then write them down on your computer for note keeping.  It’s very rewarding to be cleaning up one day and find notes from a year or two previous and realize how far you’ve progressed.

Here is my journal from the doing the program over the past few years, and there is no reason you can’t see similar gains-all it takes is consistency and intensity.  The book recommends not doing other exercise regimens while you’re doing this program, and I couldn’t help but do my other regimens, so you may even see better push-up gains than I did.

You can see how far the progression has came from where I started below, to the picture above a little over two years later, and as these push-up notes show, I wasn’t very consistent at the start, but they soon become addicting, and your body starts to really crave them, (though to be fair to myself I was also doing a regimented resistance training program four times a week).
